What Are Dentures And Removable Partial Dentures?

A dental implant is a surgically-placed prosthesis that can heal with your bone to help support dental crowns, bridges, and dentures. Because an implant is placed into the bone, it works as a secure, long-lasting alternative to a real tooth root. Second only to your natural dentition, dental implants are the best option for natural-looking teeth and restoring your ability to chew.

Are Dentures Right For You?

If you are missing teeth, have chronic tooth pain, and extreme gum sensitivity, partial or complete dentures might be the right treatment option for you. But fear not, once dentures are fitted and placed, you’ll be able to speak, smile, and eat.

What To Expect

Your Consultation

To ensure that dentures are the right treatment option, we’ll start with a consultation. We’ll perform an oral exam complete with x-rays to ensure your gums are a healthy candidate for dentures. If we’ve determined that dentures are right for you, we’ll create a treatment plan and talk about the next steps for getting your subsequent appointments scheduled.

Impressions & Extractions

To ensure the best possible fit, typical denture fabrication requires numerous steps. The first appointment requires an impression whereas the second appointment requires a more detailed final impression.

For your third appointment, we use wax rims to establish the amount of space the lab needs to place teeth in your mouth. At your fourth appointment, and before extracting the teeth and delivering the denture, you’ll have a wax try-on where we’ll be able to see the denture as it will be processed. That way, we can ensure you’re happy with the aesthetics.

Your fifth appointment will be to extract the remaining teeth and deliver your dentures. After your teeth have been extracted and the bone heals, your dentures will likely need a reline. This means that we redo the tissue portion of the denture to give you a better fit without having to remake the appliance. Partial denture fabrication requires similar steps that can, at times, be expedited. However, teeth not being saved will be removed before starting the fabrication of your partial denture.

Fitting Your Dentures

Now that we’ve created your custom appliance and extracted any teeth, we’ll use your final appointment to ensure a proper fit and make any adjustments. With proper home care and regular checkups, your new set of dentures will last for years to come.
