Periodontics

What Is Periodontics?

Periodontics is the prevention and treatment of inflammatory disease affecting the gums and supporting structures. Gum disease happens when bacteria and buildup in the mouth begin to affect the gum tissue. Our periodontal disease treatment plans help remove buildup on your teeth, combat bacteria, and prevent the disease from spreading.

You May Have Periodontal Disease If You’re Experiencing…

  • Sensitive or loose teeth

  • A shift in your bite

  • Pain when chewing

  • Swollen and tender gums

  • Blood when brushing your teeth

  • Gum discoloration

What To Expect

Your Consultation

Pursuing treatment for periodontal disease begins with a consultation. We’ll perform an oral exam complete with x-rays to properly identify the issue. If we’ve determined that periodontal disease is present, we’ll create a comprehensive treatment plan.

Tooth Scaling & Root Planing

Treatment of periodontal disease begins with tooth scaling. With this procedure, we use special tools to remove plaque and tartar around the gumline. The second step in this procedure is root planing. With this procedure, we smooth out the roots of your teeth, preventing the further buildup of bacteria and helping your gums reattach to the teeth. This portion of the treatment plan can take more than one visit and may require local anesthesia.

Depending on the severity of your gum disease, it may not be completely eradicated with one series of treatments. We’ll help you schedule subsequent visits every few months as part of your comprehensive treatment plan to aid in the prevention of disease.

Surgical intervention like gum grafts may be necessary in cases of advanced disease. If your condition requires more than our typical periodontal treatment plan, we’ll provide you with our recommendations for surgical options and next steps.

Aftercare

After your procedure, we’ll give you detailed aftercare instructions on keeping the areas clean which may include oral antibiotics or a medicated mouth rinse. Prioritize a healthy dental hygiene routine with regular flossing and brushing to keep your gum disease from worsening and be sure to schedule frequent check-ups.
